The truth is: mould in houses, buildings and cars is a lot more common than you think.

Mould does not need to be visible to cause health issues. Just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it’s not there. This was certainly the case for me. I moved into a brand new home and was bed bound within 3 months of moving in. I couldn’t even lift my arms off my bed.

I lost more than 10 years of my life to mould. It’s my kryptonite!

Sadly, most of my clients have suffered for years and have gone from health practitioner to health practitioner, spending tens of thousands of dollars desperately trying to understand their symptoms before realising that mould was causing their illness all along.

Mould exposure can lead to Toxic Mould Illness, also known as Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS), which can be extremely debilitating.

Not everyone reacts to mould in the same way. That’s because around a quarter of the population have a genotype that prevents them from being able get rid of mould once it enters their body. This means that every time they walk into a mouldy building, it sets up an inflammatory response in their body that doesn’t switch off. This can happen in as little as 10 minutes.

SYMPTOMS OF TOXIC MOULD ILLNESS

  • A deep and relentless fatigue that is not relieved by sleep or rest
  • Muscle weakness, aches and pains
  • Cognitive difficulties like memory impairment, difficulties with word recall, inability to concentrate, decreased assimilation of knowledge
  • Body pain like joint pain, ice pick pain, and morning stiffness
  • Nerve and skin issues like unusual skin sensations, tingling, numbness and hives
  • Respiratory difficulties including shortness of breath, sinus congestion, and a dry cough
  • Loss of bladder control — mould causes low levels of your antidiuretic hormone (ADH). This leads to you being unable to hold water in your body, causing frequent urinationchronic dehydrationexcessive thirst and lower back pain. This was one of my first symptoms — I spent all day running to the toilet!
  • Eye and vision problems like red eyes, blurred vision, tearing, inflammation of the eyes, and eye pain
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms including abdominal pain, diarrhoea, IBSSIBO, Candida, Leaky Gut and associated symptoms  — especially food sensitivities
  • Other various symptoms including — sore throat (this is very common), swollen glands, metallic taste, appetite swings, difficulty regulating temperature, static shocks, vertigo, confusion, disorientation, mood swings, night sweats (no, it’s not early menopause), headaches/migraines, light sensitivitymultiple chemical sensitivities.
  • Symptoms associated with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), if your mast cells have been activated.

Mould exposure can also lead to Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), which also comes with a host of debilitating symptoms. These two combined  — CIRS and MCAS — require a very gentle and gradual approach to recovery which is outlined in our Happy Gut At-Home Program.

THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP TO TAKE IF YOU’RE LIVING IN MOULD

Even though recovery from mould illness can be a long journey, it doesn’t have to be complicated. Keeping things simple when you’re already feeling overwhelmed can go a long way in helping you to feel better.

The first and most important step to take if you suspect you’re living in a mouldy/water damaged home is — GET OUT OF THERE!

In fact, one way to know if your home could be making you sick is to take a break from it for a while. Many people feel better just by staying in a safe place — aka — a mould free place.

ACTION STEPS YOU CAN TAKE RIGHT NOW

If you’re unable to get out of your mouldy/water damaged home right away here’s some things you can do immediately to help while you decide how best to approach your situation:

1- GET RID OF DUST

Mycotoxins from mould attach to dust and are then inhaled. Dust is mould food! It’s imperative to get a good vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter (the filter is important) and some microfibre cloths and become a dust buster! Yes, this is when it’s a good thing to be a ‘clean freak’!

2- GET A GOOD QUALITY AIR PURIFIER AND DEHUMIDIFIER

An air purifier with a HEPA filter can go a long way in reducing mould in your house. A good dehumidifier is also a great idea, especially if you live in a climate with high humidity. It is best practice to keep the humidity in your home to the 45% to 55% range.

3- TAKE ELECTROLYTES

4- TAKE BINDERS

9- FOLLOW A LOW MOULD, LOW HISTAMINE AND LOW OXALATE DIET

It’s also important to follow a low-mould, low histamine and low oxalate diet. This is because you want to keep mycotoxins out of your body so you can heal. There’s no point avoiding mould in your ecology and then eating it! In summary, avoid foods that either feed yeasts/fungi/mould or contain it.

Did you know that many foods are vulnerable to mould colonisation. This often occurs during the storage of certain foods. For example, grains are often stored in huge silos that are not protected from humidity for long periods of time, and this is before they sit in warehouses and supermarket storage facilities for months, or in some cases, even years.
